How to Achieve Success Using PSS
PSS is built to help powersports dealers grow online sales year over year across every marketplace. The dealers who succeed share a handful of habits, and this article lays them out. It's long on purpose: if you're serious about making this work, everything here matters.
๐ Key Point: Through the PSS Dealer Success Program, our team reviews your account against every point below and sends you a Dealer Success Report Card 1โ2 times per year. You can request one anytime.
๐ฅ Insert video here: a 2-minute overview of the six keys to success.
What you'll learn
- Who should own your PSS account, and how to set them up to succeed
- The listing, inventory, and fulfillment habits that drive results on eBay
- How pricing, customer service, and a website fit in
- How to keep growing once you're up and running
Key #1: Put a dedicated person on it
Every successful PSS account has someone dedicated to it, whether that's a one-person operation or a large dealership with 4โ5 people on listing creation and fulfillment.
โ ๏ธ Warning: The most common way new accounts fail: a dealership rushes through setup, hands the account to someone else in the building, and says "get us selling online." This almost never works.
If you're a small dealership, pick one of these approaches:
- Run it yourself first. Manage PSS personally for 6โ12 months until you know it inside and out and it's cash-flow positive. Then hire 1โ2 people to learn listing and fulfillment under you, and grow from there.
- Appoint an eCommerce Manager. Give a computer-savvy team member full ownership: account configuration, listings, and order fulfillment. Meet with them at least once a week to keep expectations aligned.
Key #2: Get results on eBay
Everything below is required to succeed on eBay with PSS. Skipping any of it lowers your odds.
Create new listings every week
Create listings weekly, if not daily. eBay rewards sellers who keep adding offerings, so don't stall out in the 5,000โ15,000 listing range. Work brand by brand and one product line at a time to stay organized: Fly Racing gloves, then Yoshimura slip-on exhausts, then wear and tear/maintenance products, etc.
Organize templates by category and shipping
Aim for one listing template per eBay Motors category, plus a few variants for categories where shipping costs swing widely.
Use a conservative inventory buffer
Popular items can sell 5โ10 units in a day, and bigger dealers often buy out closeout stock all at once. A low Marketplace Inventory Buffer is how overselling happens.
| Buffer | Risk level |
|---|---|
| 1โ2 | Dangerous |
| 4 | Average |
| 6 | Safer |
| 7+ | Recommended if you're new to eBay or your seller rating is at or near Below Standard |
Set realistic lead times
If you master only one part of PSS, make it Inventory Rules and Lead Times. If they aren't clicking, ask your Account Manager for recommended settings.
Use variation listings for helmets and apparel
When multiple MPNs share one listing, it builds sales rank and history much faster. See How to Create Variation Style Listings.
๐ Key Point: Hard parts can't be listed as variations.
Write keyword-rich titles
Generic title tags are easy, and they get average results. Shoppers search by descriptive keywords more often than by MPN, so dealers who write custom titles get found. A single extra word can make the difference:
- FMF Racing 21019 PowerCore 2 Shorty Silencer โ FMF Racing 21019 Aluminum PowerCore 2 Shorty Silencer
- Fly Racing Kinetic Women's Over Boot Pants โ Fly Racing Kinetic Women's Over Boot Motorcycle Pants
eBay says the same in its listing best practices.
Write unique descriptions
Use the Description Override feature in the PSS Catalog to work the same keywords and descriptors into your descriptions.
Fulfill orders fast
eBay and Amazon watch shipping metrics closely. Place orders with your distributors quickly and get tracking into the system as soon as you have it. Delays hurt your seller rating and can lead to suspended selling privileges.
Watch for eBay Seller Updates
Check eBay's Seller Updates page regularly for changes that affect your business.
Key #3: Price competitively
Dealers who don't discount will struggle. When a new dealer tells us after 90 days that the program isn't working, our first two questions are: are you using Price Overrides, and are you using Pricing Rules?
- Work with your distributor reps to find your best pricing and discounts.
- Check the competition every time you create a batch of listings.
- Use PSS's pricing tools to discount wherever your margins allow.
Key #4: Know where your website fits
Most powersports sales online happen on marketplaces shoppers already trust, mainly eBay and Amazon. A standalone website won't see much traffic unless you spend heavily to drive people to it.
Treat your website as a long-term play. Every marketplace order is a chance to earn a repeat customer: include your website and a specific, substantial coupon on packing slips. With no marketplace fees on webstore sales, you can afford bigger discounts.
Key #5: Deliver excellent customer service
Selling online means running a 24/7 business. Set clear expectations for how fast you respond, and be ready to track and answer every pre-sale and post-sale question promptly. Display your best contact information clearly on every platform and listing.
When a customer is unhappy, your response should be quick, cordial, apologetic, transparent, and professional.
Key #6: Keep growing
Growth is up to you. If you're ready to push further, start here.
Sell more to the customers you already have
Repeat customers are cheaper to win than new ones. Earn buyers on eBay and Amazon, then bring them back to your webstore with email, social, and mail campaigns. Without marketplace fees, you can pass savings to the buyer and still improve your margins.
Own a niche, then expand
Many PSS dealers do very well by owning one vertical: slip-on exhausts, rebuild kits, or tires. The opportunity most miss is repeating that success somewhere new. Dedicate even 10% of your time to a new category, like moving from eyewear to footwear, or from dirt bike steering components to street and cruiser. PSS gives you access to hundreds of thousands of products. Don't settle for 10,000 exhaust listings.
Hire the right people
Beyond local networking, job sites like Indeed are a good place to post. For a small team, look for:
- A strong understanding of buying and selling on eCommerce marketplaces
- Tech-savviness and a solid general understanding of the internet
- Typing speed of at least 30โ40 words per minute
- At least 1 year of experience listing or selling on eBay or Amazon
- Working knowledge of motorcycle, ATV, and UTV parts, apparel, and accessories
Measure what matters
Set goals, track your key performance indicators, and compare them month over month and year over year:
- Gross sales
- Total listing count
- Sell-through ratio (listings online vs. gross sales)
- Profit margin (net or gross)
To calculate growth rate, use (Present โ Past) รท Past.
๐ก Pro Tip: If gross eBay sales were $400,000 last year and $555,000 this year, your growth rate is ($555,000 โ $400,000) รท $400,000 = 38.75%.
